Zyppah Mouthpiece Reviews 2021 – Understanding How it Works

Snoring is something many people experience when sleeping or you might be sleeping with someone that snores. One thing about snoring that people do not know is that it disrupts your sleep. This is because snoring actually affects and hinders your breathing as your brain is not getting enough oxygen as well when you snore.

Most might think snoring is from the nose but some types of snoring is actually caused by the tongue and how it is placed. When you snore, your tongue is actually falling to the back of your mouth and blocking the airway, so when the airway is blocked the air is forcing itself through the narrow passage that it has which causes the snoring sound to happen. So if you move the tongue away from blocking the airway the snoring will stop. Hence why Zyppah was created to help with this issue and solve your snoring problems away.

Types of Snoring

Nasal

If your snoring is whistle like of a wheezing sound it would be due to your nose which is caused by some blockage in your nasal passage. The blockage might be caused by a deviated septum, some physical obstruction in the nose or just a stuffy nose or allergies.

Some symptoms that nose snorers have would be bad breath, dry mouth or if you experience headaches as well. For the deviated septum, usually surgery would be required to remove it so do consult your doctor to check what is causing your snoring.

Mouth

Mouth snorers are similar to nose snorers as it is also caused by a blockage in the nose that is too blocked which causes them to sleep with their mouth opens. In this case, when the mouth is open it causes the soft tissues in the mouth to vibrate which then causes the snoring sound. Or it might also be due to tonsils in the mouth, if your tonsils are large in size it might also cause you to snore through your mouth.

Tongue

So, for tongue snoring the snorer is most often snoring with loud pitched sounds. Just as mentioned above, the snoring that happens when the tongue is covering the airway of the throat which causes this type of snoring. This is because the tongue relaxes when you lie down which might cause it to cover the airway.

Most snorers are tongue snorers and it is the most common. If you have lots of neck fat, love to drink alcohol and consume sleeping medication, your snoring is most likely a tongue snoring. To help combat this using a mouth guard is helpful to prevent snoring

Throat snoring or Sleep Apnea

Throat snorers are the loudest of all the snorers and also the most serious one. It is due to sleep apnea and this means a person stops breathing few times while they sleep and the sleeper is unaware of this. The usually snore very loudly and the noise stops then they wake up in a sudden jerk gasping for air which indicates they stopped breathing for awhile.

This type of snoring is the most severe and if left untreated can lead to unwanted issues like high blood pressure or diabetes. Snorers of this sort should seek for medical attention, see a doctor for treatment or therapy.

What is Zyppah

So Zyppah is constructed to stop tongue snorers in particular as it is built with a tongue strap which is targeted directly to the tongue. As mentioned earlier tongue snorers snore because the tongue falls back and blocks the airway for air to circulate hence disrupting the breathing which causes snoring. The Zyppah acts like a seatbelt for your tongue holding it down in place to prevent it or stop it from blocking your airway.

The Zyppah is considered a Mandibular Advancement Devices (MAD) which are devices that stabilize the jaw and keep your tongue or soft tissues from causing snoring as it vibrates. Mandibular refers to the word mandible which is your jawbone as MAD puts pressure on your jawbone and pushes them forward slightly. The tongue muscle is also connected to the lower jaw so when the jaw is pushed forward it follows and moves forward as well which is why the tongue cannot fall back to the airway anymore. It is also a Tongue Retaining Device as it pulls the tongue or holds the tongue down in place so it does not fall back and block the airway.

This device will help prevent snoring for those who sleep on their backs as well as it is easier for the tongue to block the airway while sleeping on the back.

How to use it

To use the Zyppah there are 6 simple steps to it.

  1. Firstly you would need to get all the tools you need ready. Below are the suggested appliance you would need.
  • Your Zyppah Appliance
  • Mirror (preferably a standing mirror or a bathroom mirror not a handheld mirror)
  • Kitchen Utensils – Tongs (preferably), spoon or fork.
  • 2 Quarts of water (approximately 8 cups)
  • Paper towels or a regular towel
  • Timer
  • Microwave safe container
  1. Now, heat the 2 quarts of water till a boil and then pour it into the microwave safe plastic container. Ensure that it is deep enough for you to submerge the device into it.
  2. Use the tongs (or spoon/fork) to gently place the device into the container of water and immerse it. Soak the Zyppah in the container of hot water for about 30 to 45 seconds. Take note that the Zyppah will try to float while you immerse it in so this is when you take the tongs to keep it in the water by pressing it down while avoiding touching the sides or the bottom of the container as it might try to stick to the container.
  3. Now you can remove the device from the hot water and pick it up by the tongue strap using a fork for easy hold. After you take it out, wait for about 5 to 10 seconds till the device is warm to the touch.
  4. This step is where you mould the device to the shape of your bite. Starting with the lower teeth, you can press the Zyppah down onto your lower teeth with your fingers and then move your lower jaw forward to align your upper teeth with the Zyppah and bite it down. Hold in this position for about one minute. Ensure that you get a good impression of your teeth on the Zyppah when you bite it down.
  5. For the last step, remove the device from your mouth and then rinse it under cold water for about 30 seconds to set the shape of your bite on the Zyppah.

After all the steps, if the device does not feel right in your mouth you can still remold it to try and make it the right size. The Zyppah can be remold up to 3 more times after the original molding. To do so you just would need to repeat steps 2 to 6 again and create a new bite shape.
