Do you have trouble finding the exact firmness you are looking for? Do you often change positions while you sleep? If you’ve been having trouble finding the exact level of firmness you need in a bed, you might find luck with the Saatva Solaire. This mattress is technically an air bed that allows you to inflate or deflate the air chambers inside to get the exact amount of support and comfort you need. Better yet, each side of the bed is adjustable (for the Queen or King size), making the Solaire a great option for couples who have different sleep preferences.
So, what exactly does an air bed feel like, and will it provide pressure relief, motion isolation, comfort and etc ?
Saatva is an online-only mattress company that aims to provide the most comfortable, durable and affordable mattresses to sleepers — even with its luxury design and use of sustainable materials. The brand puts a strong emphasis on spine health, and each Saatva mattress contains patented “Spinal Zone” sleep technology that aims to reduce back stiffness, provide correct spinal alignment, and produce a better night’s rest.
Saatva was an early pioneer of the direct-to-consumer mattress movement when it launched its first namesake innerspring bed in 2011. Over the following years, the company released two additional mattresses: the premium memory foam Loom & Leaf, which gained popularity due to the mattresses’ solid construction, and the eco-friendly 2 sided Zenhaven 100% latex Mattress, they have it all. Well, so you thought.
Saatva has been instrumental in the bedding industry, by making luxury firm mattresses, a traditional innerspring mattress and selling them at a reasonable cost.
But, with the recent introduction of the Solaire Adjustable Airbed, now they have it all.
This new Saatva family member has something for everyone. Between the comfort layers of memory foam and latex. Adjustable and ideal support of the vulcanized air chambers. And the customization to ensure both sides of the mattress are perfect for any sleeper what more could you ask for ?
Below I will go through the details of the design of this fully adjustable and perfectly accommodating mattress. What to expect for comfort and how it will adapt to every body as well as the other multiple benefits you’ll get from this innovative bed. I’ll even go through the basics of what is included with the purchase of a Solaire Adjustable Airbed by Saatva.
First things first, just what is this mattress made of and why is it so unique ? Unlike most other mattresses that are supported with dense foams or coils, the Solaire is not. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t get superior support. Especially when topped with premium layers of comfort foams to ideally contour to your body, then wrap it in an organic cotton cover for a velvety soft finish.
What makes this mattress truly unique is the support/core of this mattress. The Solaire adjustable air bed uses an inflatable vulcanized air chamber. This multi-directional box is designed for precise and even support that adjusts to fit anyone’s needs. With over 50 firmness settings to adjust to find just the right amount of comfort and support.
On top of this is a moisture barrier to protect the internal parts of the chamber from any moisture that could cultivate bacteria. Making the mattress cleaner and healthier. Above this protectivecert layer is one of two comfort foams.
The Gel-Infused Memory Foam contours to your body all while emphasizing the support. This CertiPUR-US labeled foam also helps keep the temperature neutral for consistent and deep sleep. Over that is a zoned layer of Talalay Latex, this soft yet responsive foam is sectioned into 5 zones for ideal pressure relief and lumbar support. This naturally occurring material also adds to the elimination of heat, making this mattress sleep very cool.
An added cushion comes from the Organic Cotton Pillow Top. This thick topper is soft and breathable and adds an added feeling of luxury, creating an amazing mattress with the finest details down to the gold trimmed edges as well as providing an amazing sleeping surface that is designed for everyone.
When you have complete control over the precision of comfort in your mattress you can’t go wrong. The Solaire air bed offers 50 unique and ideal variances of comfort and support. Making this mattress easily fine tune to any sleepers exact needs. Regardless of if you sleep on your side, back or stomach you will find the perfect feel.
It may be the best thing about his mattress – perfect comfort. And not just for one sleeper, but for any sleeper and on both sides of the bed. The air chamber design is carefully crafted to allow for each side of the mattress to adjust independently, making the Solaire an ideal solution for couples, especially those who have different needs and preferences.
This 100% personalization combined with the balanced and harmonious comfort layers makes for a magical sleeping experience. Which is why the new Solaire by Saatva will be hard to compete against when it comes to comfort.
You can easily see how the detail to design and construction creates comfort for every sleeper, but what about the other benefits ? How firm is it ? How well does it relieve pressure ? How well does this mattress isolate motion ? Will it sleep cool ? And just how durable are the edges ? All aspects that are important in helping get a good night’s sleep.
As far as isolating motion goes it is certainly a different kind of mattress with some unique qualities. The combination of foam comfort layers with the independent air chambers should allow for minimal partner disturbance.
If you sleep with a partner who loves to move around a lot at night, you’ll definitely want a mattress that absorbs and dampens motion. To illustrate this motion transfer, a 10 lb. steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches is dropped and the disturbance it caused is measured: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
Based on these test results, you shouldn’t feel a ton of movement on either side of the bed even if each side is set to a different firmness level.
Testing out the firmness level of the Solaire is a bit different from my other reviews since you can adjust the air chamber to find a comfort level that best supports your body. Using the remote, you can choose a setting between 1-50, 1 being the softest and 50 being the most firm.
After testing out all 50 settings on the Solaire, it is found the firmness to fall anywhere between the 4-8 range, with 4 being a super soft feel and 8 being pretty darn firm. Depending on what you have the Solaire filled to, I found that its firmness rated anywhere from 4/10 to 8/10.
For those strict side sleepers in the bunch, a setting somewhere in the 20 range will likely be ideal, as it’ll provide the deep pressure relief and sinkage you need at the shoulders and hips. Stomach sleepers, who tend to doze on the opposite end of the spectrum, will probably find the most comfort in the 40-50 range as the firmness will help position the hips more on top of the structure. And back sleepers should aim for anything between 30-35 as it’ll offer a nice balance between sinkage and firm support.
To adjust the firmness level, simply use the up and down arrows on the remote that comes with the Solaire. It might take a few nights to get the firmness level just right. Be patient and play around with it until you find the perfect amount of inflation in the air chamber.
Regardless of the firmness setting, the Solaire definitely provides satisfying pressure relief and you won’t really experience any points of tension at the lower back, shoulders, or hips. To verify this, actual pressure test was run and the results were displayed on a pressure map.
As you move between positions, the map makes a colorful graphic depicting how your body was interacting with the structure in real time. Blue areas indicate zones of low pressure while red ones demonstrate high tension. I ran this test twice, once with the firmness level at 20 (medium soft) and another at 40 (firm).
Your weight should be evenly distributed if the Solaire is at both the 20 or 40 settings. Regardless of firmness level, back sleepers shouldn’t have an issue with pressure points forming across the body.
You should be pretty impressed with the pressure relief results. When you roll over to your side on the firm setting, a little green should pop up on the pressure map, but this is quite normal since more weight presses against the hips and shoulders on your side. The foam in the cover and comfort layer definitely helped cradle my body, yet side sleepers will likely experience more comfort with a softer setting to safely support the shoulders and hips.
You’ll see blue across the board on both pressure map readings. However, you might feel your hips sink into the structure on the 20 fill level and would advise stomach sleepers to choose a firmer setting to help support the hips and lower back.
When it comes to sleeping cool how can you get any cooler than sleeping on air ? The support of the air chamber means no trapped heat in this core. Along with the comfort layers that have been carefully thought out to eliminate, or at least drastically reduce, heat retention too. Making for a cool mattress for even the hottest sleeper.
The build of this mattress may have you questioning the edge support. Around the perimeter of the Solaire Adjustable Airbed is a Power Edge Enclosure. This reinforced perimeter keeps the air chamber snuggly in place. Besides that, it also offers a solid edge for optimal use of the mattress. Not only does this edge keep the mattress durable and sturdy, but it also helps hide any valves or hoses, keeping the design of this mattress aesthetically pleasing.
This enclosed perimeter works with the consistent and durable top comfort foams to create a smooth surface. This also creates a fully usable sleeping space from side to side and end to end. Ensuring the edge support is as good as any other bed out there.
This last test is all about sinkage, the component of a bed’s feel that determines whether you’ll feel “on top” of or “inside” the mattress.
Sinkage tests would be demonstrated by placing four balls of varying weights and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measuring how much they have compressed the surface.
However, because the sinkage will change depending on the firmness setting you choose, thus you’ll probably feel some slight sinkage regardless of the setting you pick because of the memory foam in the cover and comfort layer, but will never feel too stuck in bed thanks to the bounce from the latex foam.
As I mentioned in the firmness section, you’ll sink more if the bed is set to the 0-20 range, while anything in the 40-50 is likely to provide that on-top of mattress feel.
With any Saatva mattress purchase, including the Solaire, you get a 120 night trial period. This 4 months of free sleep lets you decide if your new mattress is the perfect fit. I highly doubt you’ll experience anything less than amazing sleep, but if you do, no worries. Free returns are also included. Making your purchase fail proof.
Along the same lines, all Saatva mattresses also come with a 25 year warranty. This ample and lengthy product warranty makes sure you get the best and longest lasting mattresses out there. If there are any flaws, defects or issues that arise, no problem. Saatva is there to help take care of you and your mattress.
I have no doubt that the customer service provided by Saatva will be outstanding. With their 24/7 customer support you’ll always have help at hand that’s one way to know the product is a great choice.
The best feature of this bed is perhaps its personalized support, thanks to the adjustable air chamber(s) that allows the sleeper to find the perfect firmness level. Couples who sleep together in the long term will definitely love this bed since it isolates motion and allows people to personalize the firmness level on their own side of the bed. Based on the technology and construction used, Saatva Solaire is a value-buy — especially in comparison to its competitors.
The remote sticks a little when changing the firmness setting, so you might have to troubleshoot a bit with the Solaire accessories. Due to the nature of it being an air bed, you may lose a little air overnight. If it does sink you can click the “Memory” button on the remote which will bring the air bed back to a set firmness level, not a big issue.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, Saatva sells two other mattresses under the company brand: the all-foam Loom & Leaf bed and the eco-friendly, latex Zen Haven. Let’s take a look at them side-by-side.
Similar to the Solaire, the Loom & Leaf is a memory foam mattress that emphasizes pressure relief, contouring, and support. But perhaps one of the biggest differentiators between the Loom & Leaf and the Solaire is that you won’t be able to adjust the firmness level with a click of a button, you can only choose between two different firmness levels with the Loom & Leaf. The Loom & Leaf also utilizes a special gel memory foam, which usually does a better job at keeping cool than normal memory foam does. Think of the The Loom & Leaf as a lesser, earlier and more affordable version of the Solaire as it is priced between $750 – $,1700 whereas the Solaire ranges from $1,995 – $3,645 in price.
Instead of memory foam, the Zenhaven uses latex, which is known for being bouncier and sleeping cooler. The Zenhaven mattress also features organic cotton and wool in its construction, which, along with all-natural latex, makes it a great option for eco-friendly sleepers. Instead of featuring a remote-controlled firmness like the Solaire, you can flip the Zenhaven for either soft sinkage or firm support on top. The Zenhaven is priced between $1300 – $2500, versus the Solaire’s $1,995 – $3,645 price range.
When it comes to airbeds the first thing that may come to mind is Sleep Number. With almost no competition they have made a name for themselves in this niche market. However, with the online success of Saatva, and their three unique mattresses, has given them insight and confidence into introducing their own adjustable airbed, the Solaire mattress.
The Solaire mattress by Saatva may be new when it comes to the niche of airbeds, but they certainly have some incredible details. While Sleep Number has many options and years of experience that are hard to bypass. When it comes to getting an innovative mattress that checks all the boxes you may find yourself leaning towards Solaire.
Not only are you going to be getting a premium product, you will be getting more bang for your buck. And let’s be honest, Saatva is not new to the mattress world. With their years of experience and quality mattresses you know that they will stand behind their product.
I am a big advocate that having a great sleep is something everyone deserves. With over 10 years of experience in this field, I would love to use this platform as a means to help you achieve a good night sleep.
