This review discusses my opinion on the Brentwood Home Oceano, Crystal Cove, Cedar, Cypress, and Ojai. There’s a lot to like about beds from Brentwood. They are thick, luxurious, and tend to be very comfortable. Plus, they’re one of the few brands that caters to the earth-minded with their use of natural and non-toxic materials, so stay tuned to find out more about these Brentwood Home mattresses.
Generally speaking, when you buy a mattress online you can expect free shipping, a 100-night trial period, free returns and full refunds if you don’t like the bed, or a 10-year warranty if you do.
Brentwood Home kicks it up a notch. When you buy any of their mattresses, you get free shipping, a 365-night trial period, and a 25-year warranty. You also get the standard free returns and full refund if you decide the bed’s not for you.
And, if you’re not too keen on the idea of hauling a bed-in-a-box into your house and then wrestling the rolled-up bed out of its wrapping, you can opt for white glove delivery and removal of your old mattress for an extra fee. Just so you know here’s what the unboxing process looks like.
It’s always a good idea, though, to read through the warranty details for yourself because every company has their own terms. You can find that information on Brentwood’s website.
The Brentwood Home Oceano is a hybrid mattress, meaning it incorporates both foam and coils. Specifically, the Oceano uses layers of gel memory foam and pocketed coils to create a mattress that offers both support and pressure relief.
Want a community-conscious product – The Oceano features two certifications promising a safe and clean product. Brentwood Home repurposes leftover materials to reduce environmental impact. The company will also donate a relief bed to those in need following a small customer donation.
Prefer zoned comfort – The lower coil system features 5 comfort zones to offer varying levels of compression. This should allow buyers to retain even weight distribution and proper alignment of the spine regardless of their sleep position.
Are looking for an affordable luxury product – Quality materials, cooling properties, zoned comfort, and enhanced support are all available without a hefty price tag.
Prefer a classic memory foam feel – If you’re looking for a classic memory foam experience with deep sinkage and an extra plush feel, this mattress may be a little too firm for your taste.
Are looking for the cheapest-of-the-cheap bed
Hoping for a firm bed
The Brentwood Home Oceano is a hybrid mattress, meaning it incorporates both foam and coils. Specifically, the Oceano uses layers of gel memory foam and pocketed coils to create a mattress that offers both support and pressure relief.
The construction of the mattress is broken down as follows: 2” of gel memory foam, 2.5” of individually wrapped micro-coils, 2” of Brentwood’s AirLux foam, and 8” of individually wrapped base coils.
The materials that go into the Oceano are a large part of why you’ll be paying out your eco-conscious nose for this bed.
The gel memory foam in this mattress, which provides pressure relief to keep you comfortable while sleeping on your side, is a CertiPUR-US certified material. A CertiPUR certification ensures that the foam you’re sleeping on is non-toxic and has low VOC (volatile organic compounds). That’s a good thing for both you and the environment.
By law, every mattress is required to include a flame retardant component. Most mattresses will use a chemical barrier, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but natural alternatives are preferable to a lot of people. Brentwood, for example, uses natural hydrated silica sand as their fire retardant layer in the Oceano.
The Oceano also includes a layer of sustainable New Zealand wool and a plant-based Tencel fiber cover. These layers, along with the rest of the materials in this bed, are free of toxins, pesticides, and any harmful chemicals.
Being a hybrid bed, the Oceano has both coils and foam. The construction gives the bed an innerspring feel, topped with a soft, plush, pillow top. It’s a nice balance—a good amount of support, without compromising on comfiness.
In terms of firmness, this mattress comes in at a medium-soft to medium on our scale. If you’re looking for a bed that isn’t especially firm-feeling, but doesn’t feel like a giant hotel pillow either, this is likely in your preferred range.
Now, I will say that just because this isn’t a firm mattress, doesn’t mean it isn’t supportive. The top layers of foam keep the bed feeling softer, while the two layers of coils in the bed’s construction mean you aren’t compromising on support.
When it comes to responsiveness, the Oceano is great. It bounces back pretty quickly after being depressed, which means you won’t have any trouble turning over, switching positions, or getting out of bed.
It’s not the most responsive mattress on the market, but for a lot of people that’s a good thing. The top layers are a little slower to respond, but the two layers of coils mean the bed pops back into shape relatively quickly. All in all, it’s a great blend of pressure relief, support, and responsiveness.
The Brentwood website advertises the Oceano as a cool-sleeping bed, but in my experience, it’s really a temperature neutral bed.
However, because it incorporates coils, you will get better airflow than with an all-foam bed and the layer of New Zealand wool will also help wick away moisture, so sweaty sleepers may get a bit of relief. Even with these perks, though, we wouldn’t rank this mattress as “cool”.
This is a double-sided hybrid bed with one side that feels firmer and the other that feels softer. The softer side uses charcoal-infused memory foam, while the firmer side has natural Dunlop latex foam. This is also a fully vegan mattress.
Like to switch things up – Overtime sleeping preferences can change, for this reason, a dual-sided mattress can be great.
Are eco-friendly – The materials in this product are GREENGUARD Gold and Certi-PUR-US® certified.
Like companies that give back – For each Crystal Cove Mattress sold the company builds one ReliefBed for charity.
Need an all memory foam feel – Although there are 2 inches of memory foam here, folks who prefer all-foam particularly like the minimized bounce.
Brentwood Home’s Crystal Cove Mattress compresses into a box and is shipped to your home. The bed is easily installed on a box spring, a slatted platform foundation, or an adjustable base.
The cover is a soft luxe stitched gray polyester blend. Beneath this are four layers that make up Crystal Cove’s 13-inch profile.
The first layer is a 2-Inch All Natural Latex Layer that makes up the firm side. This foam has pin holes punctured throughout to help the material breathe, keeping the surface of the bed cooler for the sleeper.
The second layer is an 8-inch Combi-Zone Coil Unit that has zoned support to better target support and alignment. The springs in this system are individually pocketed to help reduce motion transfer but maintain bounce.
The third layer uses a 1-inch Flow Foam that has a softer feel. This material is there to help transfer the sleeper’s weight into the coils on the Luxury-Plush side.
The final layer presents a 2-inch Charcoal-infused Memory Foam that makes up the
Luxury-Plush comfort layer. This foam functions to destress joints and curves by washing away pressure. The use of charcoal should act as a cooling agent, allowing you to stay cool and well rested.
The order of these layers is reversed when flipped to the Luxury-Plush side.
Firmness is rated on a scale from 1 to 10, where a 10 could be closely compared to a rock. This bed sports two firmnesses, the Luxury-Plush at a 4.5 to 5 and the Gentle-Firm at a 7. These two cover a range that should fit a majority of sleepers, no matter their sleeping position or body type.
The Luxury-Plush side of Crystal Cove is furnished with memory foam in the comfort layer, nestling the sleeper in a gentle cradle. This side should foster an experience with slightly less bounce than the latex side, but the coils in the middle should help repositioning sleepers roll over.
The Gentle-Firm supports better bounce than the opposite end. The latex foam on top helps sleeper rest in a minimal cradle and the responsive top makes repositioning a synch.
If your sleeping partner has ever jumped into their side of the bed and you feel like you might just spring off and onto the floor, you likely know a thing or two about motion transfer because you are a light sleeper.
Keeping motion grounded to one side of the bed could be the key to a restful night’s sleep if you share a bed. You might think that a combination of rubber latex and coils make a bed prone to motion transfer but these materials actually do an excellent job at isolating these movements.
The coils have been individually pocketed to protect restful sleepers from motion transfer. The memory foam side of the bed should prevent motion transfer slightly better than the latex side, seeing as memory foam is a top option for motion isolation.
This is a feature many users forget to look out for. Mattresses that are built to order online often lack in this category because they were designed to compress and fit in a box. The Crystal Cove scores above this standard, allowing you to rest comfortably situated on the edge.
This design uses reinforced coils along the perimeter so users should not feel like they are going to topple onto the floor. Whether you sleep, sit, or stand along the edge, you should feel supported and notice how strong these edges are.
This is the company’s natural and organic mattress a bit like Awara or Avocado. It combines pocketed coils, organic cotton, organic wool, and coconut husk to make one of the nicest eco-friendly beds on the market. If you like this composition, I would highly recommend that you consider the Avocado mattress as well because it is quite similarly composited. You can check out the full Avocado Mattress Review on our blog too.
Also, it is one of the most expensive bed that Brentwood Home offers.
Want to reduce your carbon footprint – This product is made from all natural materials. The textiles and latex used in this bed have been awarded a series of certifications that demonstrate Brentwood Home’s efforts to keep the planet clean.
Need exceptional pressure relief and support – If you are looking for comfort and support the targeted latex layers combined with the zoned coil support system in the Cedar should fulfill all your comfort needs.
Like a bed with bounce – This product contains two latex layers and 8 inches of individually wrapped coils. These materials provide a responsive surface that is great for transitioning sleepers as well as bedroom activities.
Have a tighter budget – Natural and organic materials often cost more but can be a worthwhile investment for those wanting to go green.
Buying online represents thousands of dollars of potential savings for those looking to buy an all natural bed, but if this particular bed runs outside of your budget, Brentwood Home offers several other more affordable beds on their website.
The Cedar ships compressed in a box right to your door. This mattress works on all bed surfaces: adjustable bases, box springs, slated platforms, and flat bases.
This four-way stretch knit organic cotton cover is quilted with a natural hydra silica sand fire block. Inside the quilted cover is Summerweight New Zealand Wool batting that regulates temperature by wicking away heat and enabling air to flow through, helping to keep you comfortable all year long.
This mattress stands 13 inches tall and has integrated several layers into its design to give you a great night’s rest. Each of the layers is hand-tufted together instead of using chemical adhesives.
The first layer is 2 inches of All Natural Dunlop Latex that provides great initial responsiveness to this bed. This layer has a fair amount of bounce and works to cushion the weight of your body. This layer is also ventilated to help keep air moving throughout the night.
The second layer is their 2-inch Grooved All Natural Latex. This layer is computer designed and has been specially cut into targeted zones in three areas that provide focused support for your shoulders, lower back and hips, and legs. Each zone of sculpted edge latex is shaped differently and placed in the bed according to what area it is designed for, in order to provide optimal pressure relief.
The third layer is an ultra-thin layer of flaxseed that helps provide additional support and separation between the layers.
The fourth layer is 8 inches of individually wrapped coils that help with deep level support for pressure points. Five Zones of pocketed coils give additional support to the shoulders, lower back, and legs while reinforced edge retention coils optimize your sleeping surface by providing a fortified bed perimeter. This layer also works with the latex layers to add additional buoyancy for transitioning.
The fifth layer is 1 inch of 100% coconut husk that is bonded with natural latex to provide a strong base that protects the bottom of your mattress.
Mattresses are rated on a scale between 1 and 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being like a rock. I’d put Cedar at a 6. Brentwood Home advertises this mattress as a medium plush, and I agree with that.
The cover is plush and soft with a hand-tufted button design. When laying on the bed this layer provides great initial comfort. As you sink into the deeper layers you can feel the bounce the latex provides. The responsive surface this bed offers should be great for combination sleepers who find themselves switching it up at night because the materials regain their shape quickly so you don’t feel stuck.
Brentwood Home has kept those who sleep hot in mind. Each layer of latex has been manufactured with pin-holes and the pocket coil support system promotes desired airflow, while the wool batting wicks away heat and regulates temperature. These features help this product breathe so you can sleep cool and comfortable.
Motion isolation can be very important for people who share their sleeping surface. Waking up because you can feel your partners every movement on your side of the bed can be pestering. This is why a bed with good motion transfer properties can be ideal.
The double latex layers and 8-inch coil layer provide this mattress with a fair amount of bounce. Individually wrapped coils, as well as the thick latex padding, should help isolate motion. The flaxseed also helps absorb some of the energy from the coils to minimize motion transfer, but some motion does make it across the surface. This should only bother the lightest of sleepers, the vast majority of people should be fine.
Bed-in-a-box brands often do not fare well in this category, but the Cedar is an exception to this statistic. Strong edges can increase the amount of available sleeping space.
This is why the manufacturer has implemented reinforced coil edges that are designed not only to keep you in your bed but also to maximize your sleeping area. This should ensure that you or anyone you are sleeping with can sleep comfortably.
This is the entry-level mattress from Brentwood Home. It basically is a gel memory foam mattress that’s designed for kids, teens, college students, and guest rooms. It’s available in an 11″ version, that is the most affordable mattress from the company, and a 13″ version, which is a little more expensive, but ends up being a fair bit softer than the 11″ model.
Are suffering from back aches – The sturdy 7.5 inches of support base works to keep your spine and neck in alignment, providing precise support for bad backs.
Don’t change your bed sheets often – Even after the sweatiest nights, kids and dogs and whoever else climbing in — it’ll stay clean and fresh smelling. This is down to two features: firstly, a 2 inch Airlux ventilation layer underneath the memory foam which allows maximum airflow through the mattress. Secondly, the bamboo cover is lined with New Zealand wool, that’s antimicrobial, moisture wicking and temperature regulating — all ideal for keeping away those pesky odors.
Dislike occasional heat traps – You might find that this memory foam mattress slept reasonably cool most of the time.
But not all the time.
On especially hot nights, however, you might wake up a little warm and could point to a couple of heat trap spots in the mattress.
Are expecting a hard mattress – Brentwood Home says that their mattress is a Medium hardness, but you might find it on the soft side of the center.
However, this mattress is still incredibly comfortable, but those of you that definitely prefer a firmer night’s sleep may not be satisfied with this bamboo memory foam mattress.
Very thick and luxurious at 13 inches, this mattress is composed of three layers.
The top comfort layer is 3.5 inches of gel infused memory foam, designed to adapt to your body shape, weight and temperature, while keeping you cool and your weight distributed. By this body regulation, you should find yourself happy to settle in one position and so enjoy a more restful night’s sleep.
Under the top layer is 2 inches of Airlux ventilation which reduces heat build-up, moisture and odors.
The final layer is the 7.5 inch therapeutic support base.
All layers are certified by CertiPUR US to be free from phthalates, formaldehyde, heavy metals and flame retardants, as well as meeting the body’s standards for content, emissions and durability.
Some mattresses are really springy, and this can prove very disruptive if you have a sleeping partner. Whether you’re trying to get to sleep or have started to drift off, few things are more frustrating than being interrupted when your partner moves around or gets in and out of bed. However, I didn’t suspect this to be a big issue with the Brentwood Bamboo Gel mattress since it does have a layer of memory foam on top.
To test it out, you can two medicine balls. Place one on one side of the mattress and drop another from eye level on the opposite side. Whether you held the ball far away or very close to the resting ball, the dropped ball will have a minimal effect on its resting counterpart. The motion isolation would be as expected with this product, and it will feel like a good solution for you if you sleep with a restless partner. In these cases, however, you should consider a larger option such as a king or California king to allow more room for these movements.
When combined with the natural materials found in the cover, you can’t help but start to feel increasingly comfortable as the memory foam conforms with your body.
In most user’s experience, the 7 ½ inch base was able to provide adequate support for the plusher memory foam in the comfort layer. However, keep in mind that, if you weigh more than 400 pounds, your experience will differ as this mattress is not designed to meet your support needs.
Pronounced “Oh-Hi,” this bed is an affordable alternative to the Oceano mattress, though, it is a little firmer. It’s still a hybrid mattress and still has all of the necessary certifications, but at a lower price point than the Oceano.
Want a versatile hybrid experience – This mattress packs a punch by combining a little bit of everything. Memory foam, latex, and zoned coils should offer optimal support or pressure relief for any type of sleeper. The overall medium to medium-firm feel should be comfortable to most of you who are looking for a new bed.
Sleep hot – Gel infused into the foam, along with a breathable cover, temperature-regulating wool, and individually pocketed coils should promote airflow and cooling for this bed.
Are looking for an affordable luxury product – Ojai is intended to be an affordable Brentwood Home item that should still provide a comfortable and luxurious high-end feel at a lower cost.
Prefer a traditional memory foam experience – Buyers who prefer memory materials often like the deep hug and body-contouring such beds can provide. The Oceano Memory Foam Mattress Topper could provide that classic sinking feeling.
This bed-in-a-box hybrid features coils, foam, and latex. Any solid surface can be used with this mattress, including adjustable frames and box springs. The company recommends for slatted bases for slats to be 5 inches or less apart so that the mattress is properly supported.
The Tencel cover is hand-tufted to reduce the need for adhesives, helping to create a more natural product. This stretch-knit material should feel soft and breathable. A layer of New Zealand Wool beneath the cover helps to further regulate temperature to prevent overheating.
The total height of this bed is 12 inches.
The first layer consists of a 1.5-inch Flo Foam. This material should be responsive while still conforming to the body. Shoppers should experience pressure relief as they lie on this material.
The second layer holds 1.5 inches of Gel Memory Foam. The gel should promote cooling and prevent shoppers from feeling overly hot despite the contouring effect of the upper layer. This material should further provide pressure relief, along with motion isolation and even weight distribution.
The third layer contains 1 inch of Dunlop Latex. This should add a deep level of responsiveness that aids in repositioning.
The fourth layer is made up of Individually Wrapped Base Coils standing 8 inches in height. These coils are wrapped in order to absorb energy, which should help minimize motion transfer. Quantum Edge Combi-Zone Coils are placed in specifically chosen areas throughout the bed to allow for a zoned effect that should provide extra support or relief for the shoulders, back, and hips.
The final layer contains a thin layer of foam to provide stability to the overall mattress system.
The perimeter features a reinforced feel all the way around the edges of the bed to provide consistency and support.
The combination of soft foams and firm springs should combine to create a medium to medium-firm comfort level. On a 1-10 comfort scale, this would be recognized as a ranking of 5-6, seeing 1 as the softest feel and 10 as the firmest.
Shoppers should find themselves floating on top of the mattress, with minimal sinkage that results in a gentle cradle. Pressure relief and lumbar support should be evident in the slightly contouring foam. The coils and latex should provide more stability that fosters neutral spinal alignment.
The memory foam should be dense with little bounce and a slower response time. Combination sleepers should have no trouble changing positions thanks to the ample bounce and quick response of the latex.
The company recommends a weight limit of 400 pounds per person, so most individual shoppers should be well-support by this product. There is a combined weight limit of 660 pounds for co-sleepers.
While this bed does have quite a bit of bounce from the latex and coils, the memory foam and fabric encasement around the coils should reduce motion transfer. This should allow light co-sleepers to enjoy fewer disruptions from restless partners.
Reinforced springs that stand rigid and firm are placed around the edges of this product to provide stable edge support. This should allow the sleep surface to feel solid all the way across the mattress. Sleeping along the edge should feel stable without fear of rolling off the bed.
I am a big advocate that having a great sleep is something everyone deserves. With over 10 years of experience in this field, I would love to use this platform as a means to help you achieve a good night sleep.
