Purple Mattress Reviews 2021 – Understanding It’s Worth

Editor’s Rating: 9/10

The Purple Mattress has 2 versions the old and the new Purple mattress. The new Purple mattress comes in 3 different comfort levels which you can choose from. The first Purple Mattress that was launched is called the Original Purple mattress.

It gained a lot of popularity as a bed-in-a-box and having its unique features and affordable price. It is made of two layers of foam and one layer of Hyper-Elastic Polymer.

Purple then launched another three new models known as the New Purple mattress. The New Purple mattress has 3 comfort levels classified as Purple 2.0, Purple 3,0 and Purple 4.0. It maintained the usage of Hyper-Elastic Polymer, but it also added the usage of coils in contrast to dense support foams for its support structure.

The Hyper-Elastic Polymer contributes heavily to the success of the Purple mattress. But what is it exactly? Hyper-Elastic Polymer is actually a gel or silicone-like material and it is used as the top layer of all Purple mattresses. This material is highly stretchy, flexible as well as responsive. As a matter of fact, the Hyper-Elastic Polymer can stretch up to 15x of its original state and instantly return to position.

Key takeaways:

  • Very different and unique mattress
  • Very Supportive
  • Hugs your body and supports it to relieve pressure points

Material

For the original purple mattress it has three layers and is 9.5 inches in thickness. The top layer which is the comfort layer is the hyper elastic polymer layer that is 2 inches in height.

This layer is the purple grid layer also known as the smart comfort grid. Next there is the second layer also known as the transition layer between the comfort layer and base layer. This layer is made with 1.8lb of polyurethane foam and is 3.5 inches in height.

Lastly is the base layer, this is the support layer of the bed offering the bed its support and shape. The base is made out of 2lb polyurethane foam that is 4 inches in height.

The newer version of the purple mattress that comes in 3 types, the purple 2, 3 and 4. The difference in material between 3 of this mattress is the height of one of the layers in the mattress.

All 3 versions have the 1 inch base layer made of dense polyurethane foam. The next layer above it is the support layer that is made with responsive coils that are individually wrapped. This layer is 7.5 inches in height and gives the support to the mattress with its edge support foam to keep the mattress supported and keep its shape.

Next is the transition layer that has half an inch of polyurethane foam that is in between the support and comfort layer of the mattress. Lastly, for the top layer of the mattress, the comfort layer. This layer varies in the three different models of the new Purple. The Purple 2 has a 2 inch layer, the Purple 3 has 3 inches and the Purple 4 has 4 inches.

The thickness difference offers different firmness and comfort level that allows the user to choose from.

Firmness

The Original Purple mattress is at a medium firm feel. If users were to try pressing onto the mattress, they would feel the Hyper-Elastic Polymer. This gives a bouncy feel and the material actually has a really quick respond to pressure.

When pressed on with added pressure and force, users might start to feel the transition layer of foam which lies underneath the comfort layer, However, the polymer grid at the surface of the bed does well with distributing the weight, so most of the feel are the comfort layer.

Of course, the firmness of the mattress will vary with different users. Heavier people will tend to feel that the mattresses are softer whereas lighter weighted sleepers will tend to feel that the mattresses are firmer. Hence, it is important for the firmness of the mattress to be tested by sleepers of different weight and sizes.

On average, on the firmness scale, sleepers should expect a 6.5 out of a 10. This gives sleepers a medium firmness feel. If the user is very light, then they may not even reach the pressure threshold to collapse the polymer columns. Thus, the mattress will be much more on the firm side for these users.

The bed is firm enough to support the heavier weighted sleepers but it is till soft enough to sink in at where it matters. Hence, this will provide some contoured feel upon lying down on it as the sleepers shoulders and hips will sink into the bed  while other body parts are still being supported it.

One of the ways Purple actually proves this is by using the raw egg test. It distributes weight very evenly avoiding the generation of pressure points.

For the New Purple mattress, when applying strong force straight into the mattress, users would feel the bounce of the mattress as it responds really well to pressure. However, the Purple 2.0, Purple 3.0 and Purple 4.0 have different level of firmness.

The Purple 2.0 is actually the firmest among the rest while the Purple 4.0 is the softest. On the firmness scale the Purple 2.0 is roughly a 7 out of a 10. This makes it a more versatile mattress being more able to accomodate sleepers of all sleeping position.

The Purple 3.0 have a level of firmness more similar to the Original Purple mattress with roughly a 6.5 out of a 10. Similar to the Original Purple mattress, it too is a medium firm mattress and actually has a good mix of support and pressure relief.

Sleepers will sink right through the comfort grid, but the pocketed coil system prevents them from feeling stuck in the mattress and find difficulty in moving. Thus, this mattress will satisfy a range of sleepers and makes it suited for combination sleepers.

The Purple 4.0 as mentioned, is the softest among all the New Purple mattress. On the firmness scale, it lies within a 5.5 to a 5.7. It gives the sleepers more of a premium feel and due to having less support, the mattress suits side sleepers more than stomach and back sleepers as it is not firm enough to support and relieve the pressure points of stomach and back sleepers.

Temperature

Due to the materials used and the way The Purple mattress was constructed, it is an excellent mattress that provides outstanding temperature regulation. The usage of Hyper Elastic Polymer in the mattress makes the bed have great air circulation and promotes breathability in the mattress.

With good airflow in and out of the mattress, there is less chances of heat to be trapped in the mattress that would cause the user to feel hot or sweat when sleeping.

In general, Hyper-Elastic Polymer is more of a temperature neutral material compared to the foams commonly used as the top layers of most mattresses. Hence making it a good material that is able to regulate temperature in the mattress.

While memory foam mattresses are good with heat retention in order to transfer the heat to their sleepers, the Purple mattress actually works in a different manner. The Hyper-Elastic Polymer does not retain heat, but due to its grid formation, it creates columns and rows of squares in which air can flow freely.

This gives the Purple mattress a huge cutting edge over its competitors. For sleepers, who tend to sleep hot or living in a hot climate, the Purple mattress is definitely one to opt for.

Durability

The base of the bed is made from polyurethane foam that is of high quality and very durable. All foams used in the bed are certified by Certi-PUR US. Purple guarantees the durability of the Hyper Elastic Polymer or Smart Comfort Grid.

The materials used in the construction of the Purple mattress are of high quality, but it is difficult to estimate its longevity due to the mattress being fairly new. However, the mattress is said to be able to last roughly between 8 to 10 years.

Edge Support

For those who are sleeping with a partner or family, edge support is an important determining factor as sleepers might need to use the entire surface area of the bed and utilize the bed as much as possible. What is edge support? Edge supports is how the bed performs at the edge of the bed and whether the sleepers feel like that might just roll off the bed or they feel secured.

The Original Purple mattress does a great job in weight distribution. The body weight of users are distributed pretty evenly throughout the mattress, hence it gives their users better support and security when lying down at the edge of the bed.

When lying down at the edge, users may notice a slight compression in the bed but not to the extent to which they are afraid of rolling off it.

When sitting at the edge of the bed, the compression will be more obvious and this is because more weight is concentrated at one area of the bed and less distributed. Although, there is compression, it still does not give average weighted users the feeling of tumbling of the bed.

Now, for the New Purple mattress. Lying at the edge of the bed still gives as much support as it would lying in the center. This indicates a great edge support that it has. Moving closer to the side, sleepers might notice a slight different feel from the top layer because the comfort grid is replaced by high-density polymer foam for a better edge support.

When sleepers roll to the very edge of the bed, there will be a slight compression through the top layer, but it will not cause the sleepers to have any insecurity about being at the edge of the mattress. The foam support does an amazing job at keeping their sleepers to feel afloat in order to make them feel comfortable and secured.

When sitting at the edge of the  bed, the New Purple mattress does a much better job than the Original Purple mattress as well as most mattresses out there. Most mattress will undergo a compression when sitting by the edge, but the New Purple mattress have really strong support even by the edge of the bed.

Motion Transfer

The Purple mattress does quite a decent job when it comes to motion isolation. Sure, it may not do a just as fine job at providing the deadening feel that memory foam mattresses provides, however the amount of motion transfer is shockingly nearly unnoticeable considering the responsiveness of the polymer grid.

The polymer grid provides bounce to the mattress that many people enjoy, thus this will give out some motion transfer, But due to the amount of space the polymer grid gas between the channels when sitting or laying on the Purple mattress, the polymer subsides beneath the sleeper, absorbing the motion of the user by the transition foams and base foams.

This results in less disturbance to the sleeper’s partners by minimizing the transference of motion causing it to be difficult to notice except for hyper light sleepers.

The New Purple mattresses being thicker than the Original Purple mattress have more foams to absorb motion than the Original Purple mattress. Therefore, it does an even better job with motion isolation.

Size

The Purple mattress comes in 5 different sizes, that is the twin extra long, full, queen, king and california king.

All the Purple mattress are available in all sizes except for the full which is only available for the Original Purple mattress.

Advantages

Support, Pressure Relief and Sleeping Position

The purple mattress is an extremely supportive mattress for all sleeping position. When lying on the Purple in all different positions, the body is able to feel pressure relief and no strains on the body.

Often times when sleeping on the side, users might feel pressure points surface on the shoulder and hip area as more pressure is being placed on a smaller surface area. However with the purple mattress, no pressure is felt on the mattress and is comfortable to sleep on.

This is due to the structure and construction of the mattress that creates the great support it has to offer.

However, if you are a stomach sleeper it might be a little uncomfortable when sleeping on it as stomach sleepers would prefer firmer mattresses and the purple is not a very firm mattress.

Stomach sleepers on the heavier scale might feel some pressure being placed on the hip area as it might sink in more to the mattress. But if you are on the lighter scale then there would not be a problem for you.

Sex

When talking about the performance of the bed during sex, bounce is a key factor and partners usually do favor the bounce. This makes Purple mattress a recommended mattress for partners as the polymer grid provides the bounce in the mattress that couples may desire.

Disadvantages

Off-gassing

Upon unboxing the mattress, some off gassing may be noticed. It is good to have an opened window, especially if the unboxing process is done at a more compact area.

When the mattress is laid out flat and taking its shape, the mattress may have a slight lingering odor that comes from the polymer. It is expected to be fine within a couple of days, but for users who are more sensitive to the smell, they may need to let the mattress breathe out for about 3 to 4 days.

Weight

The Purple mattress is quite heavy. After deflating the mattress, it would be quite hard to move the mattress around making it a less mobile mattress due to its weight. This might cause some disadvantage to those living alone or weak that are unable to move the mattress whenever they would like to.

Movement

The Purple mattress has limited movement. Getting in and out of the mattress is a little bit hard. If you are a combination sleeper and tend to move around in your sleep at night, you might face some difficulty moving on the mattress when you sleep.

What Makes the Purple Different?

The Purple mattress is something relatively new to the market and although it is often associated with memory foam mattresses, it actually is not and is very unique and different unlike any other mattress.

In fact, the Purple mattress is neither a memory foam mattress, nor a latex mattress. The Purple mattress does show some similarities and do share similar benefits as memory foam mattress. Hence, this makes it a direct competitor to memory foam mattresses.

The Purple mattress as mentioned is not memory foam and it is not gel either, however the mattress has the benefits and behavior of a memory foam with gel.

The most impressive feature of the Purple mattress is its cooling ability. The uniquely designed polymer grid keeps the sleeping surface much cooler. Due to that, the Purple mattress is actually one of the coolest mattresses in the market for sleeping throughout different conditions.

Difference in the Original mattress and the new Purple mattress

The main change between the Original Purple mattress and New Purple mattress is the new hybrid design that the New Purple mattress offers. The incorporation of the pocketed coils in the New Purple mattress  ultimately creates a more bouncy structure than the Original Purple mattress that gives the sleepers more support and lift the sleeper up and give them more of a bouying feel.

The New Purple mattress also added the high density polymer foam to provide the mattress with moer edge support and security. This is because it prevents deep sinkage at the edges of the mattress.

Who is the Purple Mattress suitable for?

If you are a combination sleeper, the purple mattress especially suits you. This is because the gel in the mattress is specially designed to collapse once pressure is applied to it, while still maintaining the support that sleepers need. When lying on the your back and stomach, there is sufficient support for sleepers and when lying on your side, the gel gives way to avoid pressure on the shoulders and hips.

If you are a hot sleeper, the gel grid allows plenty of airflow through the mattress. Overall, the temperature is neutral, so hot sleepers will need not worry about overheating.

If you are looking for a durable mattress, the gel layer along with the other materials of the mattress are designed for longevity. As mentioned, the durability of the mattress is uncertain but it is estimated to be able to last about 10 years.

If you are a lightweight side sleeper, the mattress may not be right for you. This is because the mattress needs enough pressure applied on it to make the gel layer collapse in order to get the proper pressure relief that is desired.

For lightweight side sleepers, the mattress may feel firmer and not provide the relief to the shoulders that is desired.

If you are not up for a unique-feeling mattress, then the Purple mattress may not be your best option either. The gel in the Purple mattress is nothing like what is found in other mattresses.

The Purple mattress feels squishy and needs time to get used to it. Although some people may like the feeling, some people may be unable to accept the uniqueness of this mattress and will feel that it has a strange feeling.

Which Purple Mattress is the Right One for you?

The Original Purple mattress best accommodates lighter weight to average weighted sleepers of all sleeping positions. This is due to having less support than the New Purple mattresses.

The Purple 2.0 is best for back and stomach sleepers of all weight. It has more support and firmness and is great for people searching for a durable and thick mattress.

The Purple 3.0 performs well for combination sleepers of of different weight and sizes. The mattress gives a gel-like feel, hence it suits people who like that sleeping experience.

The Purple 4.0 is best for side sleepers regardless of their weight. For those who are looking for the premium feel, the Purple 4.0 is the best choice. The Purple 4.0 is the softest mattress among all Purple mattresses.

Final verdict

The Purple mattress is a vert unique and one of a kind. Made with its Hyper Elastic Polymer or Smart Comfort Grid it is able to support your body for a well rested sleep.

This is for you if:

  • Combination Sleeper
  • Hot sleeper
